Benefits of a Guardian Dog
We have chosen to offer a Guardian Program for our dogs because we believe that ‘every dog deserves a loving home’. In most cases our guardian dogs are the only pet that the family have and our focus is to ensure they receive the love, attention and care that all dogs need. Puppy farms have become a way of bulk breeding and unfortunately the dogs and their puppies don’t experience the social and human connection they need to truly explore their personalities. Their environment is very sterile and lacks the one on one bonding due to the number of dogs and puppies in one environment. Our families are hand picked to ensure that the environment will be suitable for our dogs needs. The family also get to be involved in the puppies lives if they so choose and get to visit their dog and puppies from 4 weeks of age.
How does it work?
The breeder will first match the breeding dog to the right person/family. We need to ensure that the home environment is going to be suitable. Often it is a puppy which means the puppy grows up with its new family from the beginning although at times we have the opportunity to guardian dogs around 2 to 3 years old. The puppy/dog will live an everyday life with its new family. The Guardian Family will take care of all the needs of the puppy/dog which includes health checks, vaccinations, training, socialisation, grooming etc Once the dog is at the appropriate age (around 2 years of age), the breeder will want to start breeding. At this point the dog will typically go back to the breeder for mating. Depending on where the dog is located in relation to the breeder, the dog may be required to stay with the breeder for a few days to ensure mating has been successful and then the dog is returned to its everyday life with its Guardian Family for the duration of its pregnancy. Any costs that are associated with the pregnancy ie: vet appointments, scan, x-rays, vitamins will be paid by the breeder.
Pregnancy in dogs typically lasts 63 days, so the breeder will require the dog to return to them about a week prior to the dog whelping her puppies. This gives the dog time to settle in and find an appropriate and comfortable place to have her puppies. The dog will whelp, raise and wean her puppies in the care of the breeders home. The Guardian Family can visit their dog and puppies from 4 weeks of age. Once the puppies are older and properly weaned, the mother of the litter will return home to her Guardian Family. This process will repeat itself until the dog is retired from breeding. At this point it is the breeders responsibility to have the dog desexed and returned to the Guardian Family to live their life happily ever after!
